THE LOSS OF ONE OF OUR FOUNDING BOARD MEMBERS JOE MONTANO

It is with great sadness to report the loss of one of our founding board members Jose “Joe” Montano. He passed away peacefully in his sleep the weekend of July 25, 2016.
Joe was a teacher to our students and advocate. Joe spent his life working with communities of color and under-represented communities. Joe was integral in the forming of Liberty and Access For All . His thoughts energy and creativity are imprinted in everything we do.
Joe’s true passions in community organizing were ignited through an ambitious voter registration project, called FilVote, through the Filipino Civil Rights Advocates (FilCRA) in 1996. His career in politics took him from serving as one of the youngest Executive Directors of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations in 2000 to a state appointed position on the Virginia Asian Advisory Board from 2009 to 2013. Joe most recently served as the Northern Virginia Regional Director of Constituent Services for Senator and nominee for Vice President, Tim Kaine.
Joe will be greatly missed and forever loved by our organization. Liberty and Access For All will be creating a scholarship in his name to students wishing to create a career in politics, advocacy and civic engagement.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016, 12:30 pm at St. Pius X located on 7800 Halprin Dr., Norfolk, VA 23518. Joe’s final resting place will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery on 3000 Church Street, Norfolk.
