Interested in public policy, government relations, policy advocacy, and public affairs ? Liberty and Access for All is hosting a lab for young professionals, interns and students who want to create a career in government relations. Our panel is a group of diverse, experienced professionals who are experts in their fields.

Participants will learn about :

  • The importance of coordinating with all levels of government alongside media and government agencies
  • What skills one should hone to land and do the job successfully
  • The importance of networking
  • The hidden job seeking resources
  • Graduate school options that might be necessary

 

This is a FREE and widely attended event and lunch will be served. Seating is very limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis!  Lunch will be provided

Michael currently serves as director in the Public Policy and Strategic Alliances organization. He develops and advocates public policy positions related to the Internet, competition, spectrum, and IoT and engages the industry and stakeholder community on these issues. In his current role, he builds strategic relationships with the tech community and garners third-party and industry support through special events programming. Previously, he maintained responsibility for wireless, broadband, universal service, numbering, outage reporting, and network transformation policy issues for the Federal Regulatory Affairs group. Prior to his policy and regulatory affairs positions, Michael negotiated interconnection agreements with competitive local exchange carriers in Verizon’s Wholesale organization. Prior to that, Michael coordinated FCC and state public utility commission witness support activities for senior leadership in Verizon’s Information Technology organization. Before joining Verizon, Michael negotiated national and regional local access agreements and served as a law clerk for MCI. He worked as an account representative for a boutique public relations firm and coordinated media relations, events planning, and sports marketing for various professional sports clients. Michael is a graduate of Howard University and The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law.

Jona Van Deun has a wide range of political and corporate experiences that span over 20 years. Since 2012, she has been the Director of Coalitions for Koch Companies Public Sector. She is charged with collaborating and cultivating strategic alliances with 3rd party organizations. Prior to joining Koch, she had her own consulting business which developed and executed public affair programs, issue management campaigns and special events for various corporate and trade association firms. During a short tour overseas in 2007, she served the State Department as the Community Liaison Officer to US Consulate in Lagos, Nigeria. She produced a variety of special events, town hall meetings and other community programs to enhance post morale. 2005-2007 Jona was a Public Affairs Manager at the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) developing comprehensive public affairs plans and coordinating media relations activities. She was the Director of Site Operations for both the 2000 Republican National Conventions in Philadelphia, PA and the 2004 Convention in New York, NY. In this role capacity, she planned and implemented over 80 special events each night of the four day event in the Convention venue. After the 2000 elections, she worked on the White House Transition Team and went on to be the Advance and Scheduling Director for Mrs. Lynne, Cheney. She has held management positions with the 3M Company – Traffic Control Materials Division, DCI Group (MN) and the Pillsbury Company overseeing their federal and State government relations programs. She began her career in 1992 as a Staff Assistant to former President George H. Bush in the office of Presidential Scheduling. From 1993-1995, she was Deputy Director for Cabinet Affairs to Governor Arne H. Carlson (MN). As a professional staff member on the US House of Representatives, Committee on Ways and Means, Jona helped draft the landmark welfare reform bill which was signed in 1996. Jona is a graduate of one of the few remaining liberal arts women’s’ colleges in the US, the College of St. Benedict. She also has a special events management certificate from Montgomery College in Rockville, MD. Jona focuses her charitable and volunteerism activities towards mentoring and programs that train women for leadership roles in government .

Brooke Oberwetter joined the Facebook Public Policy team in January of 2011. She is currently the manager of external affairs for policy in Facebook’s Washington, DC, office, where she manages Facebook’s policy relationships with think tanks, advocacy organizations, and other civil society groups. Previously, Brooke worked on Facebook’s policy communications team and managed Facebook’s Small Business Boost program and Online Safety Roadshow program. Brooke attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and pursued her Masters in Public Policy at American University in Washington, DC. She lives in Arlington, VA, with her husband and two sons.
