Prominent Staffers Share Secrets to a Successful Career on the Hill

“Success happens when preparation meets luck,” advised Mary Elizabeth Taylor, a member of the White House’s Office of Legislative Affairs and a presenter at our recent event, “How to get a job on Capitol hill.” Along with Ms. Taylor, speakers Joe Donoghue, legislative Director for Senator John McCain; and Nina Smith, Director of Media Relations for Megaphone Strategies, a social justice-focused public relations firm, offered hard-earned insight and valuable advice on initiating, and advancing in, a career working on Capitol Hill. Points of emphasis included the importance of a mutually beneficial approach to networking and the large role that a proactive approach to problem solving plays in career success. The speakers also urged the predominantly college-age audience to be patient with their initial pace of advancement, as the foundation of a successful career often begins with an entry level job in which one builds a solid professional reputation and acquires practical expertise in one’s field.
